A fire on New Year's Eve destroyed a landmark John Deere dealership and repair shop in Elgin, N.D., according to the Bismarck Tribune.
Allen Hummel, Elgin Volunteer Fire Department fire chief, said they received a call of a fire at the Dakota Farm Equipment building at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Fire departments from Carson and New Leizpig responded Sunday, and they fought to keep flames from spreading to a nearby lumberyard and other businesses.
Hummel said the cold hindered their ability to put the fire out entirely, and by midday Monday fire crews remained on scene.
"(It's) too cold to keep putting water on it," Hummel said, noting that temperatures dropped to minus 30 degrees Sunday night.
The Dakota Farm Equipment building, located on Railroad Avenue East, was ruled a total loss. The cause of the fire is currently unknown, and there were no injuries.
The building doubles as a John Deere dealership and repair shop. Dakota Farm Equipment has locations in Beach, Bowman, Dickinson and Lemmon.
JoAnn Ozbun, Grant County emergency manager, said the building has existed in the community for many years. Prior to Dakota Farm Equipment, it was Dittus Farm Supply.
