When Paul and Desiree Mertens opened Lakeshore Motor Sports LLC last month at its new location on Wisconsin 42, they expanded upon a ready market for recreational bikes, lawn mowers and other equipment.

They also had met a pent-up demand for lawn mowers and chain saws before moving in April to the south end of the city at 1630 Milwaukee St.

The company introduced Snapper brand snow blowers and lawnmowers at about that time, Paul Mertens said.

"We started off selling motor sports like ATVs and motorbikes," he said. Lakeshore Motor Sports now sells Eton, Fly and Keeway scooters, along with other brands of all-terrain vehicles and dirt bikes.

But the company has expanded its lines this year to include Snapper and Echo outdoor power equipment, such as generators, leaf blowers and pressure washers, as well as commercial and residential lawn mowers.

"Now we are doing the residential and commercial lines of mowers this year," said Paul Mertens.

He handles servicing all makes of equipment with employee Rick Witcpalek with the Mertens' three sons, Josh, Jordan and Jerad Mertens. Desiree oversees the office.

One of the latest pieces of merchandise to come in is Monster Energy Drink and Rock Star energy drink apparel. They added those lines at their sons' urging.

"We wanted to keep this place more relaxing," Desiree Mertens said. "We wanted a more relaxed atmosphere. We're not like the big fancy motorsports places that scare you when you walk in."

Lakeshore Motor Sports LLC offers Snapper, Echo and other merchandise.

"We can service all makes and models of scooters and dirt bikes," Paul Mertens said. "We have lawn mowers that we service all makes of."
